So the Pharrell album leaked. My expectations had been significantly dampened by the lack of standout tracks coming out before the entire album. Pharrell & Chad Hugo have the uncanny ability of pleasantly surprising the listener, using unorthodox sounds that somehow delight the ear. Whether it's mouth clicks or sound bytes from video games they excell at presenting the unexpected. Unfortunately, Pharrell decided to do the beats all by himself on his solo (half)-effort, utilizing Chad Hugo only for the engineering and mastering portions of the album. It shows. The last great producer turned rapper album was the College Dropout, and it was great because Kanye West brought fresh beats and fresh perspective to the scene. Pharrell is way more established at this point in his career than Kanye was, and thus told himself he didn't need to do anything groundbreaking, and it that it's ok to use the same snares and guitar plucks from eight years ago. You may think I'm going to now completely trash the entire album, but I'm not. There are a few nice tracks, Pharrell still knows how to USE those tired sounds, which is obviously more important than the familiarity (and possible apathy) of the sounds themselves. The cut with Snoop, the cut with Slim Thug and the excellently smooth Take It Off all stand out. Unfortunately, the guest appearances by Pusha T, Jay-Z & Kanye West are all fantastically underwhelming. I don't know if I'll listen to this much in a few months but even though it's not interesting, it's not uninteresting, if that's a compliment.

The other two tracks I posted are pretty much polar opposites, and shining examples of what can frustrate me so much about The Neptunes. The Ludacris song is a nice stab at being a party cut, but I don't know why he would make it his first single, he's enjoying a bit of a renaissance as a lyrical beast, you can find some of his other new tracks on the internet and they're jaw dropping, and this track certainly is not. The Clipse/Slim Thug song, on the other hand, is an absolute MONSTER. Apparently they gave the beat to Foxy and then she went deaf and they gave it to Clipse and now she wants it back and I don't even care enough about that story to post a link to AHH or whatever. CLIPSE FUCKING KILL THAT SHIT THOUGH GOD DAMN.

I too was worried about the album being terrible because of the few other tracks that I had heard as well - I felt none of them before (and I'm assuming the majority didn't either since Skateboard P went back to the lab). But surprisingly, I am liking about 35-45% of the album. The "R&B" half of the album is far better than the "emcee" portion. And you're right, "That Girl" is a monster of an R&B track - everything about that track is solid and Pharrell would be an absolute fool to release anything else but that as the next single. If he doesn't, he will see mediocre sales - and that's just a fact because the other songs aren't hits like that one.
On another note, I agree with you as well about the Luda track - it's just not all that hot. He should release the lyrical tracks as that is what his buzz is about right now (and rightfully so - he's proving to be a lyrical beast). Artists have to remember that it can work with a "street single" as a lead-off. Especially when you need to prove to hip-hop heads that you can come with it lyrically.
Wish Chase would have been a part of it but, oh well, it is what it is.
i felt the same way, "ok here we go, lets just do a courtesy listen" but as the album played on i found myself becoming more and more drawn in.
that's not to say it's the greatest thing ever, and i probably do like it a lot more because of the 80s vibe he's going for. and were we really expecting chad to be a huge part of this? it's his solo, so i figured he'd do a lot to distance himself from the whole "neptunes production" thing.

oh and besides a few tracks i chose not to listen to this album at all, its really failed to grab my interest. the new ray cash is much much much better

wow.. i dont understand why y'all are hatin on the album so soon. the first couple times i let the album play i wasnt feelin it. especially since big white spaceship didnt make the album and that track is hot. but the more i listen to it, the more it grows on me.. i mean damn. the opening track. the snoop track. the slim thug track...
all im sayin is that if the first time you hear something and you like it alot right away, theres something wrong with that. i think pharrells on his shit and knows what hes doin.

This is another good Pharrell release for the most part. Im sure true fans love it because it kinda stayed the same with new sounds and new fans can enjoy it also. Mostly i like this album because its PHARRELL i mean, nuff said, so that to me gives him a little leverage when it comes to the question "is this good or not?". But the best track was the last one that i also found kinda of disturbing was Sakteboard P Shows You How To Hustle. the beat was awesome no doubt, but hearing that brings me to other rappers who say stuff they havent done. not getting on him but i like the entire concept it just shows something that many have been doing in the industry but dont know what the hell its like or they lie to some extent and later you hear on some website, mixtape, or something they never did that at all. but thats that and Pharrells album is tight none the less.
